The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking an Administrator for William S. Hart Museum in Newhall, CA. The Position is responsible for providing overall management and supervision of the daily functions at Hart Museum, including all Hart programming, staff, volunteers, budget development and management, and facility management. A key element of the position is to maintain excellent public relations among the other parts of the Natural History Museum, the Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation, Friends of Hart Park and the surrounding Santa Clarita Valley community. The Administrator supports the Research and Collections Department’s responsibility in providing a strategic program for the care and preservation of its collections, both short-term and long range. The Administrator also provides educational focus and expertise relating to all the aspects of the Museum, including exhibit development and programming and development of on and off-site educational resources and public programs.
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Provide oversight and supervision for all Hart Museum staff and volunteers.
- Ensure that museum events, programs, tour schedules are communicated to visitors, volunteers, and staff.
- Responsible for representing the museum at off-site meetings.
- Manage vehicle and equipment care with cooperation from other Natural History Museum departments.
- Oversee facility care with cooperation from Natural History Museum and Los Angeles County Department of Parks and Recreation.
- Coordinate immediate response to emergencies affecting visitors, staff, volunteers, facility or collections.
- Act as Museum representative on Hart Management Team and management meeting facilitator.
- Serve as the Museum liaison with Friends of Hart Board of Directors, participate in monthly board meetings as an ex-officio member, and provide monthly reports
- Coordinate with other departments in the Natural History Museum as appropriate to create exhibit design, content development, labels, etc.
- Working with Natural History Museum’s Research and Collections Division, implement programs for conservation and care of the Hart Museum and its collections.
- Create and coordinate special events and education programs to engage audiences.
- Produce and/or participate in programs to develop public awareness and promote attendance at Hart Museum.
- Foster community collaborations to support and promote program and publicity development.
- Represent Hart Museum at community gatherings.
- Develop education and promotion materials for distribution via website, newsletters, and mailings.
- Prepare, monitor, and manage Hart Museum annual budget(s).
This position has the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s of Arts or Sciences Degree required with a Masters of Arts or Sciences Degree preferred in Education, Museum Studies, or History.
- 3 or more years experience as a seasoned manager and supervisor of staff and volunteers in either formal or informal education settings.
- Experience facilitating programs.
- Must be proficient in basic office computing and software such as MS Word, MS Excel, email and internet.
- Familiarity with budgeting tools desirable.
- Must be able to work varied hours including evenings or weekends depending on program needs.
- Must be an outgoing, self-motivated person who enjoys working with the public.
- Excellent interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to work as a member of a team.
