Outreach Actor - CA Science Center


The Actor is the team member responsible for delivering high-quality, interactive outreach performance programs for school groups and general audiences in the greater Los Angeles area as part of Science on Tour outreach program. These are part-time positions that may include weekend, holiday and/or evening hours. While focused on the greater Los Angeles area the program does frequently travel throughout Southern California and occasionally may make longer week-long road trips throughout the year. Programs include the Desert Dome, an interactive presentation that combines technology with interactive learning to help teach students about the desert ecosystem and SuperKids Academy a high-energy health program with puppets and props.

Major Job Responsibilities:

* Perform interactive education theater programs for reserved groups and the general public in the greater LA area, and as needed throughout Southern California and longer road trips as required.
* Learn all roles for each outreach program.
* Attend scheduled rehearsals.
* Assist with the set-up and break down of the set, electronics, props, and operation of sound and computer systems
* Represent the California Science Center and uphold its mission while on duty.
* Ride with the cast in the Science Theater on Tour van to venues.
* Report all materials, equipment, cleaning and safety needs to the Outreach Coordinator.
* Collaborate with other California Science Center staff.
* Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications:

* College degree in science, theater arts, education or related field preferred.
* Experience performing in children’s theater or educational theater.
* Experience in teaching or working with the public in a museum, informal educational or public setting.
* Excellent customer service skills and team player.
* Effective interpersonal skills with diverse audiences
* Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds properly during unload and setup.
* Capable of lifting and maneuvering set pieces and props in and out of a van at school sites with ease.
* Ability to work a flexible schedule that includes weekends, holidays, evenings, some occasional out of town trips, and early mornings.
* Must possess a willingness to work with various age groups, including elementary and pre-school.
* Bilingual fluency in Spanish desirable.
* Have a clean driving record.
* Proficient using computers, basic technology and connecting electrical and audio cables.

Salary: $17-$19 per hour
