Long Beach Museum of Art - Museum Assistant

The Long Beach Museum of Art is seeking a part-time employee to serve as a Museum Assistant. As an integral part of the Education and Visitor Services department, Museum Assistants perform a wide-variety of duties related to Museum operations, customer service, and educational programs that support the Museum’s mission. Museum Assistants are both the public face of the Museum and vital to behind-the-scenes operations. They are often the first and the last person a visitor encounters. Museum Assistants communicate well with all visitors and colleagues and are capable of completing tasks at the request of any Museum employee. They must be comfortable speaking to the public about art on display in the Museum and answering inquiries about artists in the Museum's permanent collection. Museum Assistants are reliable and have no hesitation when enforcing Museum regulations or confronting any potential issues.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

·Perform daily gallery operations, including opening and closing procedures. The Museum is open to the public Thursday, 11AM to 8PM, and Friday through Sunday, 11AM to 5PM.

·Keep the Museum campus and artwork secure during open hours by guarding artwork, manning registers, and monitoring security cameras.

·Greet visitors, answer inquiries in person and on the phone, and sell admissions and memberships.

·Assist Education, Visitor Services, Development, Operations, and Administration in maintaining databases and records that relate to Museum operations and events.

·Process Membership renewals and payments.

·Assist with sales, inventory, and reports for the Museum Store.

·Lead tours and hands-on workshops for local K-12 students, youth groups, families, and adults as needed. Educational Tours and programs take place Tuesday through Sundays.

·Develop and assist in implementing educational materials and programs for the public and LBMA’s Docent Council, under the guidance of department supervisors.

·Work exhibition openings, fundraising events, and other Museum special events, as needed.

·Perform office duties related to Museum projects.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate degree preferably in Art Education, BFA or Art History, or working towards completion of an undergraduate degree with at least 1 year of prior employment in a non-profit, art, education, or customer service environment.

Ideal candidate will:

·Have excellent oral, written, computer, and customer service skills.

·Be punctual and responsible.

· Remain observant and alert over long periods of time and react quickly in an emergency.

· Be a motivated self-starter who can work collaboratively on projects.

·Have knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Raiser’s Edge is a plus.

·Work 30 hours per week, Tuesday through Sunday. Flexible schedule a plus.

· Have a start date of July 15, 2011.
