Education Coordinator - Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum

POSITION: Education Coordinator
REGULAR Part-time NON-EXEMPT $13/hr
REPORTS TO: Executive Director

Overview
Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Education Coordinator executes educational programs and resources to accompany exhibitions at the Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (CAF). The Education Coordinator serves as a liaison between CAF and the community by receiving gallery visitors, preparing for tours and educational activities. This person represents CAF at meetings, civic functions, local and regional business organizations, professional associations and related groups.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
-Oversee CAF's existing educational initiatives: Forum Lounge, Forum Kids, smART Talks, smART Salons, CAF as Classroom, Andrea Lang Fund, and the Education Resource Center, working with the Executive Director to plan any additional components to accompany exhibitions.
-Collaborate with community organizations, local public and private schools, professional education groups and the local arts community to expand the audiences, quality and scope of CAF educational initiatives.
-Supervise the scheduling and organization of gallery tours.
-Supervise all operations, opening and closing of the space, supervise the condition of the artwork and the appearance of the gallery space, greet visitors and act as an educational liaison between the public and CAF.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
-Possession of a BA in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
-At least one year experience in museum education.
-Excellent writing, administrative, organizational and communication skills.
-Must have working knowledge of Word and Excel. Knowledge of MAC OS X helpful.
-Ability to interact effectively with diverse staff, board members, supporters, community, and the general public, in a courteous and professional manner, whether in person, on the telephone, or in writing.
-Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
-Ability to prioritize and organize multiple activities, as well as supervise the activities of contributing members around a common project.
-Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends as needed.

Discovery Science Center - After School Programs Instructor

Objectives:
To ensure the quality of the educational programs offered at Discovery Science Center while fulfilling the mission of educating young minds, assisting teachers, and increasing public understanding and appreciation of science, math and technology.

Primary focus will be the Discovery Science Center After-School programs, consisting of assemblies and science classes throughout the school year.

Responsibilities:
• Directly reports to Education Manager and Director of Education, Off-site Programs.
• Conducts educational programs primarily off-site (at school sites) including assembly-style programs and science workshops for students 4 – 12th grades.
• Explains science concepts aligned with the CA Science Content Standards using hands-on activities and demonstrations detailed in the provided lesson plans.
• Assists in maintaining high quality programs.
• Procures, maintains, and inventories equipment and materials for programs.
• Interacts with students and adults.
• Attends regular meetings with the Education Manager and Director of Education, Off-site Programs.
• Drives to and arrives promptly at schools throughout Southern California and maintains a flexible schedule.
• Performs other duties as needed.

Qualifications:
• Quick learner; flexible
• Ability to work with school groups, educators, community-based organizations
• Excellent planning, organization, and time management skills.
• Excellent written and verbal skills.
• Knowledge of a second language preferable, but not required.
• Vehicle drivers license and insurance.

Education/Experience:

• Experience working in educational institution
• Comfortable learning and teaching science concepts.

Skirball Cultural Center-Full Time Gallery Educator

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks Gallery Educators to staff Noah’s Ark at the Skirball. Gallery Educators facilitate gallery-based school, group, and public programs.
On a daily basis Gallery Educators practice full-body puppetry, movement, ropes/challenge course elements and team building, percussion, storytelling, and facilitation of hands-on art-making activities.
Noah’s Ark at the Skirball includes an entire floor of hands-on galleries, an adjacent park space, and an outdoor amphitheater, all dedicated to exploring the themes of community, diversity, and building a better world.
The Gallery Educators report to the Noah’s Ark Gallery Manager.
The position of Gallery Educator is year-round and full-time; occurring during weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Gallery Educators are required to work one weekend day each week, either Saturday or Sunday as assigned. Ability to work both Saturday and Sunday a plus.
Responsibilities:
• Works cooperatively to ensure successful gallery experiences for schools, groups and the general public including guided and drop-in experiences, table-based activities; participatory movement, music, drumming, and workshops.
• Responsible for the on-going integration and application of feedback from supervisors to achieve program goals and standards.
• Resets and maintain galleries to ensure optimal condition and an aesthetically pleasing environment including daily prop cleaning.
• Assists in collecting and preparing materials for daily programs including inventory upkeep and organization.
• Works as a member of the team to ensure timely and comprehensive implementation of daily opening and closing gallery procedures.
• Proactively problem-solves to address customer service and operational issues including inter-departmental communications and follow through.
• Performs all necessary administrative work related to Noah’s Ark Gallery Educator duties as assigned.
• Troubleshoots on the gallery floor and in the park as needed.
• Tracks and evaluates program experiences as needed and assigned.
• Contributes to developing new gallery programs as requested.
• Co-trains and mentors fellow colleagues as assigned.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
• Works one weekend day each week as assigned.
Qualifications:
• Background and experience in arts education, child development, and/or related field.
• Demonstrated ability to lead educational experiences for people of all ages.
• Experience working with children and families; interactive gallery teaching experience preferred.
• Proficiency in one or more of the following specialized areas: full-body puppetry, movement, ropes/challenge course elements and team building, percussion, storytelling, and visual arts.
• Team player with a professional, positive attitude.
• On any given day, may be required to do one or more of the following: climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, lifting, sitting on the floor to meet visitor and program requirements.
• Ability to work long hours that require physical agility and sustained energy
• Ability to multi-task and work under pressure in a fast-paced, highly sensory environment.
• Ability to model positive behavior through words, actions, and attitude in challenging situations.
• Ability to assess the needs of the galleries and assist in maintaining a safe and educational environment.
• Ability to problem-solve independently and collaborate with others.
• Ability to receive and respond positively to feedback.
• Fluency in second language a plus.
