Director of Interpretation, Natural History Museum of LA County

Reporting to the Vice President, Education and Exhibits, the Director of Interpretation will be a key member of the leadership team of the newly formed Department of Education and Exhibits, along with the Directors of Exhibits, Programs and Evaluation. The Director of Interpretation will build from an existing core of staff and docents to create a world-class volunteer program and an outstanding interpretive training program specific to the NHM. It is expected that the Director of Interpretation will be involved in the development of interpretive content throughout the museum, but that his/her primary focus will be interpretation on the floor. Positions reporting to the Director of Interpretation include four Managers who supervise Volunteers, (paid) Gallery Interpreters, Environmental Education/live animals and Garden/Plants.

The successful candidate will bring proven experience in delivering and leading interpretive initiatives and programs, a passion for working with volunteers and a coherent vision for building a great volunteer program. He or she should have a collaborative leadership style, outstanding communication skills, a strong track record in interpretive leadership as well as proven ability to deal with complex content and competing priorities. He or she must have a successful record of collaborating with active researchers/scholars/scientists as well as with audiences, volunteers and constituencies such neighborhood groups, descendent communities and others. A Bachelor’s degree and a strong background that includes interpretive delivery, training and development is required; a graduate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field (e.g. a scientific or cultural discipline, Education, Communications) would be an asset. Experience with biological and paleontological as well as cultural/historical exhibits would be ideal, as would a second language (especially Spanish). A proven track record in the management of interpretive projects, budgets and staff is a key requirement.

Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full time, regular, exempt position.

Manager, School & Teachers Programs, Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County

Reporting to the Director of Programs, the Manager, Schools & Teacher Programs serves as a key member of the Programs Department (Education & Exhibits) team and works closely with colleagues throughout the Museum and within the Education and Exhibits Division to create dynamic school programs.
As Manager, School & Teachers Programs you will:

- Be responsible for the budgets, development, implementation and evaluation of the Museum’s school and teacher programs.
- Oversee all aspects of the museums programs involving pre-K through 12th grade, including onsite (NHM and Page Museum) and offsite (mobile museum) programs.
- Supervise the program managers responsible for onsite school visits and mobile museum.
- Coordinate closely with Managers of Informal Education, Volunteers, Live Animals and others responsible for the direct delivery of programs to deliver suite of experiences for all school groups.
- Develop strong relationships with area teachers and administrators, and work closely with museum interpretive staff to develop programs that provide schools programs and activities on relevant themes and curricula.
- Provide strong, creative leadership and vision for all aspects of school programs.

This position has the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Education, or a museum related academic field e.g. Biology, Geology, History, Anthropology (required). Graduate degree or equivalent (preferred).
- 2-3 years project management experience with educational programs (required). -Classroom experience as a K-12 educator (strongly preferred).
- Must have prior school, community related position or comparable experience at successively 5 or more years experience in education with proven success in program development and implementation.
-Experience with project and budget management, reporting/ analysis and scheduling projections.
-Excellent interpersonal & supervisory skills, strong organizational capabilities, effective supervisor, enthusiasm, flexibility.
- Ability to make key program decisions and foster a team environment to create dynamic school programming.
- Facility in a second language (especially Spanish) useful.

Membership Coordinator Santa Barbara Museum of Art

The Santa Barbara Museum of Art seeks a dynamic, motivated Membership Coordinator responsible for the development and expansion of the Museum’s Membership program. The position reports to the Senior Development Officer and is responsible for data entry of membership gifts and maintaining the Museum’s Member database, writing acknowledgement and appeal letters, preparing mailing lists, coordinating mail house, and overseeing budget.

The position requires supporting member-related events on evenings and weekends.

Must have 2-3 years of experience in fundraising, membership support, or related field.

Requires data entry and record-keeping experience with attention to detail and accuracy, proficiency with Microsoft Office, and excellent customer service skills. BA degree or equivalent experience in membership or related field is preferred. Must maintain discretion and confidentiality. Knowledge of fundraising software – Raiser’s Edge or other – an asset.

Project Coordinator Heritage Square Museum

Heritage Square Museum’s eight rescued historic structures tell the story of the development of Southern California like no place else.

The Museum is seeking a computer savvy and organized part-time (20 hour/week) Project Coordinator for its new preservation program.

Pay is $11-$13 per hour.

Responsibilities: Grant reporting to government agencies and private foundations, coordinate efforts of consultants, instructors and partner institutions in forming and implementing curriculum, student recruitment and placement and office duties as necessary including: data management, filing, word processing, etc.

Provides administrative and programmatic support to specific grantmaking and/or operating programs as assigned including:

- program and field-related research
- creating, contributing to, and/or editing qualitative and quantitative program-related research, reports, proposals, and correspondence
- assist in the planning, implementation, and management of programs
- content and due diligence review of grant applications and reports
- planning, logistical, and clerical support for program-related meetings, site visits, convenings, panels, etc.
- maintenance of program contacts and constituent files and databases not covered by the grants manager or program assistant
- creation and maintenance of program files for LA office
- tracking of program budgets and timelines
- occasional logistical and clerical support for external affairs-related meetings, convenings, events, etc.

Collaborates with program staff to build and maintain effective communications and efficient systems within the department including:
- logistics and minute taking for program-related meetings and events
- attending, participating in, and sharing information from outside meetings and events
- suggesting efficiencies

Keeps program staff abreast of relevant program issues
