We are looking for a person to lead our formal education programs at the Ty Warner Sea Center, including development, implementation, and evaluation. This person ensures that all the school programs facilitate inquiry-based learning and correlate to California State Science Standards; ensures that all grant-funded programs comply with funding agencies’ guidelines; schedules school visits and collects fees; develops and maintains a comprehensive knowledge of marine science content and best practices for science education.

The successful candidate will have a background in marine sciences and/or education, including degrees and/or credentials; proven success as an educator in classroom, museum, or other setting; enthusiasm for teaching outdoors; strong organizational and leadership skills; dedication to teaching marine science to children; available to work occasional weekends, holidays, and evenings.

California Science Center: Educator

The Educator is responsible for delivering high-quality, interactive science education programs to school groups and the general public visiting the California Science Center. The Educator delivers Science Live! Programs and large-scale demonstrations in the exhibit galleries and education facilities. The Educator assists with setting up materials and equipment.

Major Job Responsibilities:

  • College background in science, education, theater or related field preferred
  • Experience in teaching or working in a museum, informal educational or classroom setting
  • Excellent oral communication skills
  • Effective interpersonal skills with diverse audiences
  • Excellent customer service skills and team player
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends, holidays and evenings
  • English and Spanish bilingual is a plus but not necessary.

Qualifications:

  • Presents educational programs for large groups in the Big Lab, exhibit galleries or education facilities
  • Tracks guest attendance numbers and surveys for all programming
  • Presents interactive demonstrations at other programs such as Summer Camps and other special events
  • Tracks the use of consumable supplies and report any required materials or equipment maintenance needs to the appropriate supervisor
  • Assists with training new staff and volunteers with education programs

Salary: $11.25 per hour
