Senior Curator of Education - LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes seeks a Senior Curator of Education to lead the Museum’s education programs. The Senior Curator of Education will provide leadership and vision for education programming that explores Mexican and Mexican American art and culture.

The Senior Curator of Education is fully responsible for implementing the cultural center’s education programs, including interpretive activities for semi-permanent and temporary exhibitions; organizing and presenting classes, lectures, symposiums, and gallery tours for children and adults and other educational initiatives as needed to fulfill LA Plaza’s humanities-based education function.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

ADMINISTRATION:
-Supervise all personnel involved in education programs including full and part time staff and volunteers.
-Supervise Curator of Education and oversee her/his work.
-Prepare education department budget for approval by Director of Programs.
-Prepare appropriate grant narratives and budgets in collaboration with the Development Department to support education projects and programs.
-Supervise documentation and evaluation of all education department programs, events and activities.
-Advocate as appropriate for art and culture education programs and the cultural center as a primary educational resource in the community.
-Develop in-house and outreach educational exhibitions as appropriate.

DOCENT PROGRAM:
-Work with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and retain docents; develop docent training curriculum and materials.
-Schedule programs and present lectures related to the history of Los Angeles, art appreciation, exhibitions, tour methodologies and other educational activities as needed.
-Work with Docent group to organize, evaluate and coordinate them appropriately.

SCHOOL PROGRAM:
-Supervise and prepare education curricula and materials for children and teachers that reflect California state standards.
-Serve as liaison to teachers to develop curriculum and provide in service training.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS:
-Work with Director of Programs and LA Plaza staff to develop and implement a dynamic schedule of public programs.
-Develop interpretive materials, labels and appropriate outreach initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
-A Master’s Degree in Art Education, Visual Arts, Museum Studies or related field required.
-Two years professional experience in museum education.
-History of progressively responsible professional appointments with supervisory experience.
-Strong interest in Mexico and Mexican American art, history and culture.
-Fluency in Spanish highly desired.
-Demonstrate evidence of knowledge of museum education models.
-Must have excellent communication, managerial and administrative skills.

ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
-Demonstrated and effective skills in writing and public speaking.
-Demonstrated research skills.
-Ability and temperament to work effectively with volunteers, colleagues and general public.
-Maturity appropriate for representing LA Plaza’s interests to educational organizations and professional groups and the public.
