Senior Curator of Education - LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes

LA Plaza de Cultura y Artes seeks a Senior Curator of Education to lead the Museum’s education programs. The Senior Curator of Education will provide leadership and vision for education programming that explores Mexican and Mexican American art and culture.

The Senior Curator of Education is fully responsible for implementing the cultural center’s education programs, including interpretive activities for semi-permanent and temporary exhibitions; organizing and presenting classes, lectures, symposiums, and gallery tours for children and adults and other educational initiatives as needed to fulfill LA Plaza’s humanities-based education function.

SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

ADMINISTRATION:
-Supervise all personnel involved in education programs including full and part time staff and volunteers.
-Supervise Curator of Education and oversee her/his work.
-Prepare education department budget for approval by Director of Programs.
-Prepare appropriate grant narratives and budgets in collaboration with the Development Department to support education projects and programs.
-Supervise documentation and evaluation of all education department programs, events and activities.
-Advocate as appropriate for art and culture education programs and the cultural center as a primary educational resource in the community.
-Develop in-house and outreach educational exhibitions as appropriate.

DOCENT PROGRAM:
-Work with Volunteer Coordinator to recruit and retain docents; develop docent training curriculum and materials.
-Schedule programs and present lectures related to the history of Los Angeles, art appreciation, exhibitions, tour methodologies and other educational activities as needed.
-Work with Docent group to organize, evaluate and coordinate them appropriately.

SCHOOL PROGRAM:
-Supervise and prepare education curricula and materials for children and teachers that reflect California state standards.
-Serve as liaison to teachers to develop curriculum and provide in service training.

PUBLIC PROGRAMS:
-Work with Director of Programs and LA Plaza staff to develop and implement a dynamic schedule of public programs.
-Develop interpretive materials, labels and appropriate outreach initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
-A Master’s Degree in Art Education, Visual Arts, Museum Studies or related field required.
-Two years professional experience in museum education.
-History of progressively responsible professional appointments with supervisory experience.
-Strong interest in Mexico and Mexican American art, history and culture.
-Fluency in Spanish highly desired.
-Demonstrate evidence of knowledge of museum education models.
-Must have excellent communication, managerial and administrative skills.

-Demonstrated and effective skills in writing and public speaking.
-Demonstrated research skills.
-Ability and temperament to work effectively with volunteers, colleagues and general public.
-Maturity appropriate for representing LA Plaza’s interests to educational organizations and professional groups and the public.

Manager, Outreach - Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks a Manager, Outreach Programs to work with our Education & Exhibits department. This position reports to and works closely with Director, Programs and supervises the Project Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Instructors and Drivers. The Manager, Outreach Programs is responsible for the oversight, planning, budget management, implementation and growth of all of the Museum's Gluck Outreach programs for LAUSD schools with an emphasis on the newly developed onsite field trip experience component.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to supervision of Outreach staff, budget management, grant reporting, and identifying program goals and projects for ongoing outreach programs such as the Earthmobile, Seamobile, and Skymobile in collaboration with School Visits onsite, NHM and Page. In addition, the position is responsible for all necessary hires, oversight of the database management, booking visits, website updates, scheduling, and teacher workshops.

This position requires excellent communication skills (both written and oral), independent initiative, experience with managing a team and supervising staff, active engagement with projects, pro-activity, professionalism, and attention to detail.

This position has the following requirements:
•Bachelor's degree in Education, Biological Science, History, Anthropology or related field (required). Graduate degree or equivalent (preferred).
•2-3 years project management experience with educational programs (required).
•Must have prior museum, community or comparable experience at successively high levels of responsibility.
•Demonstrated success delivering school focused programs
•Computer proficiency, PC and MAC, Microsoft Office suite required
•Basic Proficiency with MS Project desired

Lead Instructor, Outreach - Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks a Lead Outreach Instructor to work with our Education & Exhibits department. This position reports to and works closely with Manager, Outreach Programs.

The Lead Outreach Instructor assists with Outreach logistics, scheduling, program implementation and maintenance of program supplies. The position works closely with the Outreach Program Manager and Project Coordinators to identify both program and instructor needs. These programs include but are not limited to the Earthmobile, Seamobile, Skymobile in collaboration with School Visits onsite, NHM and Page. Teaching these programs, maintaining program kits and supplies, as well as training new instructors, are significant components of this positions. The Lead Outreach Instructor performs peer-observations and other coaching responsibilities to support instructional growth. The position assists with the development of weekly instructor schedule and as manages the day-to-day operations of the individual programs while on school site.

This position requires curiosity, active engagement with projects, pro-activity, professionalism, independent initiative, and effective communications with children and adults.

This position has the following requirements:
•Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Natural Sciences or Education
•2-5 years teaching in an informal environment
•Familiarity with the dynamics of a formal education setting

Project Coordinator, Outreach - Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County seeks a Project Coordinator to work with our Education & Exhibits department. This position reports to and works closely with Manager, Outreach Programs. The Project Coordinator provides project coordination, administrative and logistical support for all Gluck Outreach projects.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to identifying program projects, curriculum development/revisions and instructor needs to maintain specific support for ongoing outreach programs such as the Earthmobile, Seamobile, and Skymobile in collaboration with School Visits onsite, NHM and Page. In addition the position is in charge of database management, booking onsite visits, scheduling buses for outreach related schools, assistance with check-in and logistical support for onsite programs and teacher workshops, creating work orders, scheduling instructors onsite.

The Project Coordinator is responsible for project related communications and coordination among all team members, serving as the interface to the Manager, Outreach Programs and as the point person for all communications. The position works closely with all project personnel - Manager, Outreach Programs, School Programs Manager, Outreach Instructors and Drivers, Museum Interpreters, Operations, Security, and Guest Relations.

This position requires curiosity, active engagement with projects, pro-activity, professionalism, attention to detail, and independent initiative.
