Director of Interpretation, Natural History Museum of LA County

Reporting to the Vice President, Education and Exhibits, the Director of Interpretation will be a key member of the leadership team of the newly formed Department of Education and Exhibits, along with the Directors of Exhibits, Programs and Evaluation. The Director of Interpretation will build from an existing core of staff and docents to create a world-class volunteer program and an outstanding interpretive training program specific to the NHM. It is expected that the Director of Interpretation will be involved in the development of interpretive content throughout the museum, but that his/her primary focus will be interpretation on the floor. Positions reporting to the Director of Interpretation include four Managers who supervise Volunteers, (paid) Gallery Interpreters, Environmental Education/live animals and Garden/Plants.

The successful candidate will bring proven experience in delivering and leading interpretive initiatives and programs, a passion for working with volunteers and a coherent vision for building a great volunteer program. He or she should have a collaborative leadership style, outstanding communication skills, a strong track record in interpretive leadership as well as proven ability to deal with complex content and competing priorities. He or she must have a successful record of collaborating with active researchers/scholars/scientists as well as with audiences, volunteers and constituencies such neighborhood groups, descendent communities and others. A Bachelor’s degree and a strong background that includes interpretive delivery, training and development is required; a graduate degree or equivalent experience in a relevant field (e.g. a scientific or cultural discipline, Education, Communications) would be an asset. Experience with biological and paleontological as well as cultural/historical exhibits would be ideal, as would a second language (especially Spanish). A proven track record in the management of interpretive projects, budgets and staff is a key requirement.

Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full time, regular, exempt position.
