Laguna Art Museum, Curator of Education

The Laguna Art Museum, a museum of California art, seeks qualified candidates for the position of Curator of Education. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Curator of Education is charged with developing and overseeing all educational programs of the institution. He or she works with children, families, students, docents, and the general public, and devises programs that relate both to special exhibitions and to the museum’s permanent collection. In an institution that is growing and changing under the leadership of a new executive director, the Curator of Education will be encouraged to use his or her creativity and initiative to re-think and build afresh the whole educational effort. The museum seeks candidates of some maturity and experience who are none the less willing to work in an engaged, hands-on way to make the educational programs successful and effective.

The responsibilities and duties of the position include:

  1. Development, implementation, evaluation, and oversight of all educational initiatives and programs, responsive to current thinking in the fields of museum education, education theory, and informal learning.
  2. Training, supervision, mentorship, and expansion of the docent corps, working with both the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions.
  3. Making presentations to the public, as well as to member groups, the board of trustees, and staff.
  4. Attending museum functions and orchestrating weekend educational activities as needed.
  5. Working closely with the museum’s curatorial team to implement and promote exhibition goals and the mission of the institution.
  6. Supporting the development department with educational content for grant proposals and donor and marketing materials; providing input on prospective sources of funding of educational programming. Stewarding relationships with current and prospective funders.
  7. Developing, managing, and tracking the department budget

Capabilities and experience required:

Qualified candidates will have an B.A. in Art History or a related field and a minimum of four years of museum experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Candidates should also possess excellent interpersonal, communication, and teaching skills, as well as experience working on cross-departmental teams, supervising staff and/or volunteers and interns, and managing budgets. Candidates must be familiar with best practices in the field of museum interpretation, and with current strategies for reaching varied audiences. Technical literacy and familiarity with new technologies in mobile interpretation is highly desirable.

Natural History Museum: Manager, Volunteer Programs

The Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County is seeking an energetic and enthusiastic Manager, Volunteer Programs for the Natural History Museum (NHM). Reporting to the Director, Education and Programs, the Volunteer Manager will lead a team responsible for developing a world-class volunteer program that delivers a rich indoor and outdoor experience. The Manager, Volunteer Programs is responsible for creating – in collaboration with staff throughout the NHM – an environment that supports and enriches the lives of volunteers providing service in the public areas of the Museum with a focus on the Museum’s mission and visitor experience. The successful candidate will plan, recruit, place and supervise volunteers, support retention and recognition activities, provide introductory training and coordinate more specialized training. The Manager, Volunteer Programs needs to love working with people, be detail-oriented, have strong organizational skills, the ability to follow through consistently, be flexible and adaptable while maintaining the highest professional and visitor experience standards and will demonstrate a desire to learn, grow and excel.

Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:

- Provide the vision of the Volunteer Program in support of all public and educational programs, interpretation, research and special events.
- Develop a recruitment and retention program that creates, sustains, supports and recognizes a diverse volunteer workforce responsive to the needs of the NHM visitors and museum requirements.
- Supervises and guides volunteers while insuring a rich and engaging training program focused on content and engaging interpretive delivery for school groups and for other visitors.
- Conduct volunteer orientations, trainings and assist in educating volunteers in the Museum’s Mission, Ideology, Vision and Strategic Priorities, and our visitor-focused culture.
Collaborates with staff throughout the museum to support the volunteer program and - museum activities.
- Day to day Manager of Volunteer Coordinator and oversight supervisor for all volunteers working on public floor.
- Work closely with the Docent Board (NHM) and the Manager, Volunteer Programs (Page) for a holistic approach to volunteer program with sister institutions.

This position has the following requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant discipline.
5-10 years experience with a volunteer program or comparable experience in an educational or non-profit environment.
Demonstrated passion for and commitment to providing Volunteers of a wide range of ages, backgrounds and interests with a rich and rewarding experience.
Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
Interest and capacity to understand and share a range of NHM content, and ability to collaborate with a wide variety of professionals from diverse fields.
Ability to make critical and independent decisions when appropriate.
Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills.
Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to follow through.
Must be able to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends. Standard schedule will include at least one weekend day per week.
Must be self-motivated and goal oriented.
Fluency in a second language ideal.
Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office software and ability quickly to master new systems.


Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent benefits. This is a full time, regular, exempt position.

Curator of Public Programs
We seek a dynamic individual to serve as Curator of Public Programs. Under the supervision of the Director of External Affairs and working with senior museum staff, the Curator of Public Programs will research, develop, and implement the Museum's programmatic offerings to enhance and broaden engagement with the Museum for the general public and the UCLA community. The successful candidate will be a highly creative thinker capable of conceptualizing wide-ranging, exciting, and informative programs that consider the Fowler Museum's collections and exhibitions, as well as of the global issues around which the Museum's mission has evolved. Additionally, the Curator of Public Programs must be efficient and detail-oriented in order to produce events and manage their myriad details. Education Manager
Under the supervision of the Director of Education and Curatorial Affairs and working closely with other staff and students, the Education Manager will plan, implement, and evaluate services for school communities, youth and families, and university faculty and their students. The Manager serves as a member of the external affairs and education division, and collaborates closely with colleagues to expand and deepen the Museum’s mandate for arts and humanities education. The successful candidate will be highly creative and energetic and have a background in world arts, experience working in museum education, and the ability to oversee an active school visit program and lively family program agenda. The candidate is expected to develop and present teacher training programs centered on ideas and issues related to the museum’s collections and exhibitions, as well as initiate and carry forward meaningful interactions and ongoing partnerships with campus faculty. The training and supervision of a small group of student educators who also serve as gallery teachers is a key responsibility of this position.
